When tasked with designing a magazine for CONCERTO, a European Commission initiative, I was excited to develop a publication that would reflect the forward-thinking nature of the project. CONCERTO focuses on optimizing entire communities for smarter energy use, making cities more sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly.
The magazine itself was a comprehensive 74-page publication, created with a strict grid system that ensured clarity and consistency across all chapters. Each section was thoughtfully designed with unique pictograms to visually represent key subjects, making complex topics more approachable for readers. I employed a carefully considered color-coding system to distinguish between chapters, creating a seamless reading experience while emphasizing the initiative’s multifaceted approach to urban sustainability.
Designing for a project of this scale meant more than just delivering a clean, professional layout—it was about aligning the visuals with CONCERTO’s mission to drive Europe toward smarter energy systems and a sustainable future. The European Union’s ambitious 2020 energy policy targets, aiming for 20% energy reduction, increased renewable energy, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, were central themes that needed to resonate with both policymakers and industry leaders alike. Every visual decision was driven by the need to simplify these intricate concepts while ensuring the content remained engaging and impactful.
The result was a magazine that seamlessly balanced structure and creativity. The cohesive visual approach allowed for a polished, professional aesthetic while making the content more accessible and enjoyable to navigate, setting a high standard for editorial design in the sustainability sector.
